direct lineage reprogramming

A new finding by Harvard stem cell biologists demonstrates that it is possible to turn one type of already differentiated neuron into another within the brain.

The discovery by Paola Arlotta and Caroline Rouaux “tells you that maybe the brain is not as immutable as we always thought, because at least during an early window of time one can reprogram the identity of one neuronal class into another,” said Arlotta, an Associate Professor in Harvard’s Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (SCRB).

 Arlotta and Rouaux now have proven that neurons too can change their mind. Arlotta targeted callosal projection neurons, which connect the two hemispheres of the brain, and turned them into neurons similar to corticospinal motor neurons, one of two populations of neurons destroyed in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The work in Arlotta’s lab is focused on the cerebral cortex. These experiments will facilitate work in a new field of neurobiology that explores the boundaries and power of neuronal reprogramming.

your biggest fan

Do you have a biggest fan? How we see ourselves is how others will see us. With this in mind, let's proceed to the next level.

Do you have enemies? Think this. Maybe there is no such thing as enemies.  No one's vying for our demise, so much as their own ascension. Maybe having opposition is our desperate explanation for why we face conflict we don't understand. Maybe our self-consciousness is behind why we feel judged by others.

Maybe becoming our own biggest fan will destroy whatever we perceived was against us.

Maybe becoming our biggest fan is the answer. Have confidence and conviction. This will attract a support system. There are no fair-weather fans by becoming your biggest fan. We must first support ourselves. We are our own complete and total support system

This notion leads to a better feeling within ourselves. We will have no enemies. We will have no opposition. We will have no conflict.

This attitude comes with practice. Be grateful for what you have and for what you are about to receive. Keep your thoughts positive. Go for the big picture. Make yourself part of the big picture. The sum is greater than all of its parts. A part is greater than the whole. We are that part.

inside out

We all become the media when we post. It's not about us. It's about the social media platform. It's about leveraging the medium. We build relationships and networks. We share.

Becoming a social entity transforms the organization from the inside out. Becoming social  starts from the inside.

So must we start from the inside? Must we find ourselves from the inside out? Finding our "within" so we are better in tune with the culture and society allows us to better understand our purpose and intent.

When studying social media I have been amazed at the results. One item that comes to mind is the amount of users on social media. This is really astounding. We are part of this astonishment! Our journey is directed by the inside out.

We have to invest in ourselves. Invest for the long haul, and we'll achieve more. This is how to create value. Concentrate on the inner thoughts that will be successful. Focus on the knowledge needed for solid concentration that puts the pieces of the puzzle together.

Measurement in social media is the lasting friendships and understanding garnered from friends and followers. Be prepared to enjoy yourself.

concentration

Concentration means an uneven, unbroken flow of thought. All knowledge is the result of concentration. Thus the mind becomes a magnet and the desire to know draws the knowledge and makes it ours. Concentration requires the control of the physical, mental, and spiritual being. The subconscious mind may be aroused and brought into action to serve us for any purpose by concentration. The result of continuous concentration results in a patient, persistent, persevering, well-regulated system. Concentration unfastens the prison bars of unbelief, weakness, impotence, and self-belittlement. This allows us to enter into a realization of the joy of overcoming.

Desire is largely subconscious. Subconsciousness arouses the latent faculties of the mind and brings the object of conscious desire within reach. Spiritual Truth is the controlling factor to translate modes of thought into character and consciousness. Desire is the strongest mode of action.

All mental discovery and attainment are the result of desire plus concentration. Desire added to concentration will wrest any secret from Nature. Concentration is the transmutation of thoughts into practical values. It leads to intuitive perceptions and immediate insight and is equivalent to being a great actor forgetting oneself in the portrayal of his character, swaying the audience by the realism of the performance.

In experiencing great emotions that go with great thoughts, the mind is in a state where it appreciates the value of higher things. The spirit of initiative and originality is born. The value of concentration encourages decision of character. The mind becomes efficient and desire is the predominating force. The mind is an engine whose power is undreamed. Thought is an omnipotent power, the ruler and creator of all form and all events occurring in form. Thought enables man to harness all other natural power.

Vibration is the action of thought. There is nothing mysterious concerning the power of thought. If we concentrate on some matter of importance, the intuitive power will set in operation. The mind absorbs the object of its attention. The mind gives it life and being. Help will come in the nature of information which will lead to success.

Strength is determined by mental attitude. Keeping the thought in mind, it will gradually take tangible form. Turn thought within to take hold of the basic principles, the heart, and the spirit of things. When we get to the heart of things, it is comparatively easy to understand and command them. Let thought dwell upon the object.

"Thought is the property of those only who can entertain it." - Emerson

the regius poem

When thou meetest a worthy man,
Cap and hood thou hold not on;
In church, in market, or in the gate,
Do him reverance after his state.
If thou goest with a worthier man
Then thyself thou art one,
Let thy foremost shoulder follow his back,
For that is nurture without lack;

A portion of the Regius Poem, circa 1390. First published in the U.S. in 1840.

It is far more ancient than that of the other manuscripts, showing that it was written in an earlier stage of the English tongue. It belongs to Early English which succeeded the Anglo-Saxon.

the decision doctrine

One of the most powerful qualities of doctrine is its scalability. Doctrine can be nested inside other doctrine. For example, the doctrine related to helicopters is nested inside the network-centric approach to fighting war.

There are four tenets:

  • A robustly networked force improves information sharing;
  • Information sharing enhances the quality of information and shared situational awareness;
  • Shared situational awareness enables collaboration and self-synchronization, and enhances sustainability and speed of command; and
  • These, in turn, dramatically increase mission effectiveness.
The distributed approach to managing helicopters flowed from this higher level doctrine, especially in how to achieve self-synchronization. A shared framework was used so all helicopters could operate. Action was taken to use the framework. Doctrine was used to improve performance.

Let's look at the event. What guidelines are needed to produce a successful event?
  • Rules: the power of ideas to change attitudes.
  • Responsibilities: who is the event for? Define this guide decisions.
  • Resources: best practices for designing, promoting and sponsoring.
Good doctrine becomes embedded in the culture.

How can you apply doctrine?
  • See where you might already have elements of doctrine.
  • Identify areas.
  • Involve the broader team
  • Focus on principles, not policies.
Good doctrine provides the empowerment, autonomy, and direction.

Business leaders recognize the importance of pushing decision-making down the organization and out to the front line. Leaders must create mechanisms that keep everyone aligned to the mission and coordinated in the field. The traditional tools of management — strategy and planning — are no longer sufficient. Strategies lack guidance and plans are to rigid to adapt.

Doctrine guides decisions.

try this experiment

1) We are hard-wired to think short-term, not long-term
2) We also seem to be hard-wired to confirm to the herd mentality

We have a tendency to "anchor".

Anchoring is “our tendency to grab hold of irrelevant and often subliminal inputs in the face of uncertainty.”

Go to this zerohedge.com post and try the experiment yourself.

We usually anchor to the recent past.

the consumer culture

The definition of the consumer culture as the way enterprise apps go are social intuitive interfaces that borrow heavily from Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and other mainstays.

One solution is the cloud-based collaboration tool that combines social media and project management. Email for project collaboration can be difficult to manage. Plus feed images are popular with marketing team members.

Video is also becoming a popular way to communicate and share ideas.

Coordination of project teams with "spaces" for group conversations associated with calendar events and tasks are special.

When choosing a solution be sure ease-of-use is evident.
